ATLANTA, July 28, 2011- The Atlanta Track Club (ATC) is recruiting local nonprofit organizations to participate in its Adopt a Marathon Mile program on Sunday, October 30 during the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay. Organizations are invited to “adopt” a mile along the route, assisting with water stops and creating “cheer zones,” in exchange for a donation from the ATC. Tax exempt nonprofit organizations are eligible and must meet the minimum requirements to be considered for the program.
The registration deadline for nonprofit organizations is Monday, August 1. Organizations will be selected based on their funding needs and ability to recruit volunteers for one of the marathon miles. Volunteer requirements for participating charities include:
- A minimum of 15 volunteers to assist the ATC at your mile’s water stop
- A minimum of 15 spectators and cheer leaders in your “cheer zone”
Organizations that meet the minimum requirements on race day will receive a base donation of $3,500. Bonus points, which can be redeemed for additional donations up to $7,500 per nonprofit, will be awarded to organizations that offer extra course support. Points will be given based on categories including the number of volunteers, number of costumes, signage and promotion of the nonprofit, among others. Detailed information on the program, along with the application, can be found here.
“Adopt a Marathon Mile is a celebration of the community and an excellent way to give back to Atlanta nonprofits and the neighborhoods along the race course,” said Tracey Russell, executive director of the ATC.
Selected organizations will be notified by the ATC on August 10, 2011. The course starts and finishes at Atlantic Station and leads runners through well-known sites and eclectic city neighborhoods. The year’s Atlanta Marathon prize purse is $10,500.
